This time, try to guess what Sullivan might have been up to on Sept 11, 1884. I’ll give you a hint. It was productive, in the compositional sense. It involved a Gilbert & Sullivan show. Does that help?
Guess now … don’t read ahead!
Ok, here we go:
September 11, 1884
wrote new Introduction to 2nd Act, (Chorus) & etc.
of “Sorcerer”.
E.
This, of course, is the revised intro to Act 2 of The Sorcerer, which, in my limited experience, is always performed today; plus its chorus Why, where be oi?. The Glasgow Herald reported:
They sing, and eventually join in a jolly country dance, which last night was unanimously encored. How much these works owe their success to the intelligent stage direction of Mr Gilbert and to the attention he pays to the perfection of every detail, nobody who has been to the Savoy could fail to have observed.
“E.” is as mysterious as always.
